History and conservation

Chapada Diamantina has a rich history dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, when it was one of the largest diamond-producing regions in the world. Intense mining activity has shaped local culture, but it has also brought significant threats to the environment.

To protect its natural beauty, the Chapada Diamantina National Park was created in 1985, administered by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio). The park protects diverse ecosystems and unique geological formations.

Today, Chapada is an ecotourism center, attracting visitors to attractions such as Morro do Pai Inácio, Poço Azul and Cachoeira da Fumaça. Sustainable tourism is encouraged, benefiting local communities and preserving the region for future generations.
